Final electricity consumption in Romania declines 4.8pct in January 2025

Final electricity consumption in Romania decreased by 1.4% in the first month of 2025, to 4.46 billion kWh, y-o-y, while electricity exports increased by 43.1 million kWh, reaching 1.113 billion kWh, according to data published on Friday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the INS, final commercial electricity decreased by 4.8% in January 2025, y-o-y.

Official statistics reveal that, between January 1 and 31, 2025, the main primary energy sources totalled 2.725 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe), up 73,900 toe from January 2024.

At the same time, domestic production amounted to 1.431 million toe, down 5.8% year-on-year, and imports amounted to 1.294 million toe, up 14.3%.

In the reference period, electricity sources were 6.095 billion kWh, down 80.8 million kWh.

Thermal power plants generated 1.900 billion kWh, down 4.7%; hydropower plants generated 871.6 million kWh (-42.6%), and nuclear-electric power plants provided 1.022 billion kWh (-0.2%).

Also, the January 2025 production from wind power plants amounted to 498 million kWh, down 307.3 million kWh, year-on-year, while solar energy produced in photovoltaic installations was 117.4 million kWh, up by 11.1 million kWh.

INS data underline that final electricity consumption stood at 4.459 billion kWh, 1.4% lower, household electricity consumption increased by 11.1%, and public lighting decreased by 4.3%.

As for the export of electricity, it was 1.113 billion kWh, up 43.1 million kWh from January 2024.

Technological self-consumption in networks and stations declined 59.7 million kWh to 522.6 million kWh.
