UDMR’s Kelemen Hunor: For this coalition to continue, Antonescu must win

Published on

The current coalition can move forward only if the candidate of the Alliance Romania Forward, Crin Antonescu, wins the elections; otherwise, it cannot, Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) President Kelemen Hunor said on Monday.

„Usually, the one who wins the elections, although they lost in comparison to 2020, but has the most mandates, must have the possibility to form a majority. If they fail, of course, you move forward. There are exceptions. (…) But the rule is: the one with the most mandates should give the prime minister. Here we need to add something: for this coalition to continue, Antonescu must win. If Antonescu does not win, this coalition cannot move forward. We must all be aware of this. No matter how much we talk or tell stories. If this majority, with 3,000 mayors, with a parliamentary majority, five months after the parliamentary elections, does not have the ability to win the presidential elections, it means that it has no support in society. And from a moral standpoint, there will be enormous pressure. And the new president will need a parliamentary majority,” said the UDMR leader on Digi 24 private television broadcaster.

He brought to mind that every president needs a parliamentary majority.

„If Antonescu doesn’t win, whoever wins will try and make a majority,” he said, adding that if Antonescu losses this majority will not be functional until autumn, and that he would work on the campaign for the election with Crin Antonescu, ruling out any alternative.

Kelemen Hunor underscored that Romania must not enter Russia’s influence.

„The European Union will change, the West will change, that is clear. What is happening in the world today is something absolutely new, but Romania must be on this side of history, not under the influence of Russia. (…) And we must have arguments for the United States that no better medium- and long-term ally than Europe can be found. Regardless of the current tectonic movements and who, how understands these movements. Because here too, there is a story to be told about what is happening in the United States, what is happening in transatlantic relations, what is happening globally, what power games and rearrangements of international relations are taking place, but Romania must remain on this path. And with Antonescu, it will remain on this path, one hundred percent. There are no other options, we should not look for other options,” emphasised UDMR President Kelemen Hunor.

Asked if Nicusor Dan is a formidable opponent for Crin Antonescu, Kelemen Hunor replied: „They are, of course, on the same electorate. Elena Lasconi, Daniel Funeriu, and a few others are also running for the votes… Victor Ponta wants to present himself as an anti-system person, but he cannot be anti-system.”

„Nicusor Dan, of course, it can be said that he is independent, but he is not independent. He was a founder of USR [Save Romania Union], left USR, and was supported for the mayor’s office by USR, PNL [National Liberal Party] and political parties. He is a young man, he is a man who wants power, this is evident in him, and a man who will fight for the second round, just as Antonescu will fight for the second round. There are about four or five people who today have almost an equal chance to enter the second round. (…) Tomorrow, everything we see at the moment will close,” he added.
