Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania (UDMR) chair Kelemen Hunor on Wednesday said that the future of the ruling coalition depends on the result of the presidential election this May, particularly on whether or not Crin Antonescu will win the election, context in which the Save Romania Union (USR) can join government for a comfortable majority and for avoiding huge pressure.
„I think that we all need to show a little maturity. In politics, either at the national level or when referring to the president office, the government or the legislative body, there is need of maturity. First of all, during this time, we will do anything in our power to win the election. We do not take into account other scenarios. And it all comes down to mathematics. PNL (National Liberal Party) – PSD (Social Democratic Party) – UDMR does not make a majority in Parliament. And it will be of course very tough, like suicidal tough, to be in a minority government at this point. So, let’s win the election first, with Crin Antonescu. The coalition goes on and USR may join so that we will have a comfortable majority,” said the UDMR head.
Asked if Victor Ponta, also candidate in the May election, would be an obstacle for Crin Antonescu, in the sense that it can win some of the voters of PSD, he showed that there could be some sympathizers left for the former party president and compared this case to that of Mircea Geoana.
„I cannot answer this question, because I am neither a voter nor sympathizer for Mr. Ponta. We will campaign for him. I believe that when a former PSD president is running for president, they will be sympathetic, as it happened in the case of Mr. Geoana,” explained Kelemen Hunor.
