EduMin David decides to launch pilot-project for use of artificial intelligence in educational units

Minister of Education and Research Daniel David has decided to launch a pilot-project for the use of artificial intelligence in educational units.

„After a meeting with the management of Microsoft Romania, the Minister of Education and Research, Daniel David has decided to implement a pilot project for the use of artificial intelligence in educational units, in order to optimize the activity of teaching staff, the learning process of pupils/students and the educational process in general”, informs a press release from the Ministry of Education and Research.

The Ministry will establish the initial pilot unit, and Microsoft Romania, together with its management, will assume the implementation of the project.

„Artificial Intelligence is a technological development that, in itself, is not good or bad, but which can become so, depending on how we use it. In order to use it well, to the advantage of the educational system, we will pilot such an approach, and then, depending on the results, we will expand the process. We have already started a massive digitalization process in educational units in the country, and the framework plans include mandatory subjects (associated with information technology) and optional (including artificial intelligence) associated with the technological revolution we are going through, aspects that create the premises for the more complex use of artificial intelligence in the educational environment”, Daniel David was quoted as saying in the press release.

According to him, artificial intelligence is a tool for the teaching staff and the pupil/student, which must always be ethically and morally monitored.

„Be careful, however, in my view, artificial intelligence is a tool for teachers and pupils/students, not an alternative to teachers or a tool that ‘makes’ pupils/students lazy, and, very important to understand, it is a tool that must always be monitored ethically and morally. Various countries have already started such projects, probably the most recent example being Estonia, which even wants it to be generalized at the level of the entire education system, so I don’t want Romania and our education system to fall behind,” the minister added.
