UDMR’s Kelemen Hunor: I would increase retirement age for the judiciary tommorrow

Published on

UDMR (Democratic Union of Hungarians of Romania) chair Kelemen Hunor on Monday stated that he would increase the retirement age to 65 years for the judiciary, because „there cannot be a state within a state, and these people should not be regarded as more special than others.”

According to the UDMR leader, „a reform in all systems” is necessary, including in the field of justice.

„In the judiciary, yes, I agree. I would pass a law tomorrow, if it were only in my power, because, ok, we can’t mess with their pensions, since they solved it in such a way that the politics remained completely exposed (…), but the retirement age, yes. Starting tomorrow, I would increase the retirement age to 65 years for every magistrate, because it is impossible to explain to people why a judge or a prosecutor leaves at 50 years old and has a pension of 20-30 000 RON, exactly when he/she is the most experienced, when he/she has both life experience and professional experience, and he/she is still strong. You have invested a lot in him/her as a state, and then they leave you at 50 years old, you leave, thank you, with a special pension, after which of course he/she enters the legal profession, enters the notarial field,” Kelemen Hunor told the Euronews television channel.

The UDMR leader added that „it would simply be a message to the society that we are equal at least in terms of the retirement age.”
