Decision to postpone entry into Visa Waiver is unfair (USR’s Mosteanu)

Published on

The leader of the Save Romania Union (USR) deputies, Ionut Mosteanu, considers that the decision to postpone Romania’s entry into the Visa Waiver program is „unfair” and mentions that it is time for a new minister to represent Romania abroad.

„Has anyone heard of Emil Hurezeanu? After the scandal at the Munich Security Conference, after he lied about the Tate brothers, there was silence. Today’s decision to postpone Romania’s entry into the Visa Waiver program is unfair. Millions of Romanians were waiting to finally be able to travel to the U.S. without a visa, after over two decades of hopes and diplomatic efforts. And it won’t be possible now either,” Mosteanu wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

He accuses the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emil Hurezeanu, of not providing the necessary information, but also of not doing „anything” during the period when he was ambassador in Vienna, and Austria did not agree to Romania’s entry into the Schengen area.

„This injustice is similar to the Schengen injustice. It is ironic that we have the same characters involved. At that time, Emil Hurezeanu was Romania’s ambassador to Austria. And he did nothing. Now he is the Minister of Foreign Affairs. And we know nothing. It is time for a new minister to represent us externally. Emil Hurezeanu did not even have the courage to come to Parliament, at the call of the USR, to answer questions. He does not even have the courage to stand up straight in front of our Western partners, to represent us with pride”, Mosteanu also writes.

The USR leader accuses Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu of being „as absent as in the Schengen case”.

„Marcel Ciolacu speaks vaguely to us about ‘technical delays’. He has remained as absent as in the Schengen case, as silent as in the face of inflation. Romania needs leaders who understand the world we live in. Respected ministers and prime ministers, not lazy ones. Not ministers who are silent and prime ministers who pretend that is none of their business. Have more courage. If you can’t, take a step back”, concludes Ionut Mosteanu.

The implementation of the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for Romania is under evaluation, the operationalization of the ESTA system is to be postponed until a date to be announced by the American side, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) informed on Tuesday.

The review of Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program is a strictly technical measure, part of a process of global reassessment of the risks to U.S. security, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said, adding that he hopes it will be short-lived.

„I am convinced that the review of Romania’s inclusion in the Visa Waiver program is a strictly technical measure, part of a process of global reassessment of the risks to U.S. security. There is currently no concrete link to the common steps taken so far by Romania and the United States within the Visa Waiver program. We have met all the criteria and have deservedly earned our place in this program. I understand the context of the general reorientation of the Trump administration’s policy, which places a strong emphasis on combating immigration and strengthening U.S. borders. We will support this effort as a true partner would,” Marcel Ciolacu wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.
