Romania will not send any military personnel to Ukraine (interim president Bolojan)

Romania will not send any military personnel to Ukraine, but Romania could be a transport hub for the designated forces, in the event of a peace plan in the neighboring country, declared on Thursday interim president Ilie Bolojan, who was in Paris.

He participated in the meeting of heads of state and government of the „Coalition of the Willing” on security in Ukraine.

The interim president said that Romania must be prepared, in this regard, „with the logistical side”.

He addressed the situation of possible peace agreements between Ukraine and Russia and evoked coordination with the USA.

„This coordination is very important, because it covers both what happens until a peace agreement is reached, the keeping of sanctions (…) and also the post-agreement measures, the assurance measures, so that there are sufficiently strong guarantees, because this agreement is not just a temporary phase between two wars, but it is a robust peace, which ensures both Ukraine and Europe,” the president also pointed out.

In this context, he highlighted that there were discussions in Paris on peace-guaranteeing forces, in the event of such an agreement.

„From this point of view, as I have said before, Romania will not send – and I have announced this matter as clearly as possible – any Romanian military personnel to Ukraine. But in a hypothetical situation, in which a peace agreement is reached, the possibility of a plan, of an analysis regarding the forces that could ensure such a guarantee was discussed. These forces would not reach the front line area in any form. They could be located either on the Eastern Flank, or at a great distance from the front, on the territory of Ukraine. And anyway, the transit of these forces would only be possible through Romania, at least those through the southern area. From this point of view, we will participate as a transit country, a hub, in these discussions, so that the General Staff know what these plans could be, because if such a hypothesis is reached, we can be prepared with the logistics infrastructure part”, said Ilie Bolojan.
