CSAT approves endowment of Romanian Naval Forces with new light corvette

Published on

The members of the Supreme Council for National Defence (CSAT) analysed and approved, in Friday’s meeting, the endowment of the Romanian Naval Forces with a new, light corvette, capable of executing, in the shortest time, a multitude of missions, so that the necessary steps can be taken by the Ministry of National Defence for its acquisition, according to a press release by the Presidential Administration.

„Endowment with such a ship will have a significant impact on the existing fleet, being part of the modernization and endowment programmes in various stages of implementation,” the cited source reads.

The Presidential Administration specifies that the Romanian Army will continue to focus its strategic efforts on strengthening its defence capabilities at the national and allied levels, with a view to deterring and effectively combating all types of classical, asymmetric, hybrid or other threats.

The measures to be pursued at the national level in order to effectively manage the effects of the situation in Romania’s immediate neighborhood were discussed at the CSAT meeting, chaired by interim president Ilie Bolojan, as well as the actions aimed at consolidating the contribution to collective defense within NATO and to the strengthening of the European security and defence dimension.

„It is clear that we must assume, together with our European partners, a greater role in maintaining peace on the European continent. This means that it is necessary to take into account, in the future, a phased increase in the percentage of GDP allocated to defence spending, without creating budgetary imbalances, using European instruments to this end. At the same time, in order to respond effectively to the new geopolitical challenges, Romania needs to adopt a proactive strategy, while at the same time strengthening its bilateral relations with the USA, with a view to maintaining a consistent US military presence on Romanian territory, which is essential for our country’s security interests. Strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence posture, especially on the Eastern Flank, remains a priority,” the press release further mentions.
