PM calls for urgent update of administrative measures against bear attacks as chief rescuer brutally mauled

Published on

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu on Monday asked Romania’s central and local administrations to urgently update the administrative measures to prevent bear attacks on people, after a tragedy that occurred on Sunday evening, when the head of the Predeal Mountain Rescue was mauled by a bear on a street in the town.

„If additional decisions are needed to protect the lives of Romanians threatened by bear attacks, such solutions must be taken urgently. I am calling on all central and local administrations to urgently update all administrative measures to prevent tragedies like the one last night, when the head of the Predeal Mountain Rescue was attacked by a bear on a street in the town. Yes, we want to respect the general principles related to animal protection, but such arguments can no longer be invoked when solutions such as the relocation of bears prove ineffective. If bears and llamas frequently arrive on the streets of a town, especially a tourist one, it is clear that we are witnessing the occurrence of a situation of major public risk, and those animals must be extracted, all in accordance with the new existing legal framework,” Ciolacu said on Monday in a social media post.

According to him, it is necessary to start „quickly” including the installation, in risk areas, of electric fences that will effectively protect people’s lives.

„I am willing to take on any new wave of criticism from environmental NGOs funded by Soros and from all representatives of anarchic progressivism, in the country or in Europe. The life of Romanians is more important than anything.”

Head of the Predeal Mountain Rescue is hospitalised in serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit of the Brasov County Hospital.

He was off duty at the time he was attacked by a bear.
