Crin Antonescu, the candidate of the „Romania Inainte”/”Romania Forward” Alliance, went on Thursday to the National Council for the Study of the Securitate Archives (CNSAS) to review the documents in his file and received copies of the statement he gave to the Securitate (political police during the communist regime, editor’s note) in connection with a friend leaving the country.

„I took exactly the copy, the document I was interested in. I saw all the documents I was entitled to take. I now have copies of the famous statement,” said Antonescu.

He clarified that no leader of the coalition had asked him to go to CNSAS.

„It was strictly my decision,” Antonescu added.

Antonescu is scheduled to hold a press conference on Thursday at 5:00 PM at his campaign headquarters.

On Wednesday, the „Romania Forward” Alliance candidate announced he had submitted a request to CNSAS to receive all documents from his file related to the former Securitate. He pointed out that he intends to make the documents public.

Crin Antonescu, the Social Democratic Party (PSD) – National Liberal Party (PNL) – Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) coalition candidate for the presidential election, gave a statement to the Securitate in 1988, but the CNSAS determined that he cannot be classified as an agent or collaborator of the former communist secret police.

According to the official confirmation published on the CNSAS website, Antonescu appears in an informative file and gave a statement in 1988 about a friend, while he was a teacher at a school in Niculitel, Tulcea County.

Antonescu said on Tuesday that he had no relationship with the former Securitate, except as a person under surveillance, and asked for his CNSAS statement to be made public.
