Romania’s motorways get 140 kilometres longer in 2024

The length of motorways in Romania increased by 140 kilometres (km) in 2024, and the length of the public road network totalled 86,847 km, of which 17,994 km (20.7%) were national roads, 35,091 km (40.4%) were county roads and 33,762 km (38.9%) were communal roads, according to data published on Thursday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

By type of covering, 51.5% (44,752 km) of the public roads were modernised roads (94% modernised using heavy and medium-grade asphalt), 23.7% (20,563 km) roads with light road surfaces and 24.8% (21,532 km) gravel and dirt roads.

As regards the condition of public roads, 25.7% of the length of the modernised roads and 37.7% of the length of roads with light road surfaces had exceeded their service life.

Of the length of national roads, 6,189 km (34.4%) were international roads, 1,137 km (6.3%) motorways and 121 km (0.7%) expressways, and in terms of the number of lanes, 2,323 km (12.9%) were 4-lanes, 314 km (1.7%) were 3-lanes and 39 km (0.2%) were 6-lanes.

The length of the county roads included 52.7% of modernised roads and 33.3% of the communal roads were paved roads.

As of December 31, 2024, the length of public railway lines in operation amounted to 10,611 km, of which 10,515 km (99.1%) were standard gauge railways, 91 km (0.9%) were broad gauge railways and 5 km were narrow gauge railways.

Railway density was 44.5 per 1,000 square km of land. The highest densities by development regions were recorded in the Bucharest-Ilfov region (206.3 per 1,000), Vest (60 per 1,000), Nord-Vest (47.8 per 1,000) and Sud-Muntenia (43.8 per 1,000).

On the same date, the length of the main railways was 5,961 km, representing 56.2% of the simple length of the railway lines in operation.
