During the debates on EU-US trade negotiations, Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI), an independent member of the European Parliament, called on the European Commission to agree on important issues and try to reach a joint agreement with the US.
Below is the full text of the statement made by Luis-Vicențiu Lazarus (NI), an independent member of the European Parliament:
„Mr. President, dear colleagues, perhaps we are approaching the issue from the wrong angle, and perhaps, I don’t know, the European Commission is confusing the negotiations with the United States and with President Trump with the negotiations it usually has with a country in the European Union.
What do I mean by this? President Trump came to power in the United States and found the United States with a debt of 37 trillion, and he did not think for a second about imposing new taxes on the American people, whereas, for example, in Romania, the country I come from, although the president who took over the leadership of Romania promised not to increase VAT, for example, that is exactly what he is doing now.
So we need to be a little careful about the nuances. If the European Commission imagines that negotiating with Trump and talking about retaliation and countermeasures will make Trump more malleable, it is sorely mistaken. That is not the pattern of negotiation. You agree on important issues and try to reach a common agreement. Otherwise, I’m sorry.”
