Declic, FunkyCitizens associations ask President to know Venice Commission’s opinion before promulgating justice laws

Published on

Declic and Funky Citizens associations on Friday asked President Klaus Iohannis not to promulgate the justice laws before the opinion of the Venice Commission, according to Agerpres.

In an open letter, the two associations ask President Klaus Iohannis not to promulgate the justice laws before the expert opinion of the Venice Commission, expected next week, is known, arguing that, otherwise, „with a critical opinion and with the promulgated laws, Romania risks remaining with the Monitoring and Verification Mechanism and losing the chance to enter Schengen.”

„Following the civil society’s discussions with the representatives of the Venice Commission, it emerged that the opinion of the experts regarding the three laws on justice will be published quickly, in November. The Constitutional Court of Romania outlined the legislator’s responsibility to bring the laws into agreement with the requests from the MCV and of the Venice Commission. That is precisely why it is essential that the President of Romania waits for the opinion of the experts, before deciding whether to promulgate the laws or return them to Parliament,” the document states.

According to the Declic and Funky Citizens associations, the three laws – the law on judicial organization, the law on the statute of judges and prosecutors and the law on the Superior Council of Magistracy – passed through Parliament without serious debates, through an accelerated procedure.
