EnviMin Barna Tanczos: Firewood amount put on market in 2022 up by one million cubic meters

Romsilva and the private owners of forests, respectively the administrative-territorial units, have this year put on the market 7.178 million cubic meters of firewood, one million cubic meters more than last year’s quantity, the Minister of Environment, Water and Forests, Barna Tanczos, said on Monday in the Parliament’s plenum, at the Government Hour, according to Agerpres.

According to the minister, „out of the 6.7 million hectares of forests, which are almost half-half in state ownership, respectively in private property, wood is exploited both for industrial purposes and to provide firewood for the family.”

The minister also stressed that the price of firewood varies from region to region, and the lack of wood was replenished and solved, „and the price was capped at 400 RON by Emergency Ordinance”.

„More wood was put on the market, more wood was consumed, because there was a higher demand and, of course, the Government wanted to protect the citizens in this crisis situation. It is also the reason why the Emergency Ordinance was issued,” the Environment minister said.

„At the Ministry of Environment, an analysis was made how much a cubic meter of wood costs at Romsilva. The average price they told us… In the analysis we made before making the decision, it was mentioned 200 RON per cubic meter for wood and we considered that 400 RON per cubic meter somehow covers the other costs that go into the entire process of firewood supply. It turns out that it is not exactly in line with reality, that’s why we will take corrective measures. We have the power to recognize where we are wrong and to take measures accordingly,” the prime minister said at a press conference.

And Barna Tanczos recently said that the Ordinance on the price cap on firewood will be improved and that a decision will be made in the Coalition and in Parliament, in the Chamber of Deputies.
