The tourism industry recorded, in 2022, a real increase in demand for travel and nearly registered the results obtained in the record year 2019, shows an analysis published on by the online travel agency eSky, according to Agerpres.

According to eSky data, on average, Romanians booked their trips almost 40 days in advance and spent around 6 days abroad. City breaks were definitively established in Romanians’ travel plans, and their frequency was twice that of longer trips.

„2022 was certainly a year that both tourists and those working in the industry in general remember as a return to mass tourism. The peak demand for air travel was staggered, with Romanians flying most often in the holiday period and autumn. Interestingly, more people traveled last year between September and November than in the same period of 2021 and 2019,” the analysis shows.

According to the quoted source, the first five positions in the ranking of the most popular destinations for Romanians in 2022 have not changed significantly, although among the top 10 there are countries that were less popular until now.

In first place is Italy, followed by Great Britain, Germany, Spain, France, Belgium, Ireland, the Netherlands, Austria and Greece.

Last year we noticed that Romanians appreciated city breaks more than ever. The higher frequency of short trips confirms the significant increase in their popularity.

Airline fares have increased by about 38% compared to 2021, due to the increase in the price of jet fuel, a result of the war on the eastern border. The biggest increase in prices was recorded in the segment of international flights – for example in Europe – the average price of a plane ticket increasing by 27%. Continental travel was less expensive, with prices increasing by an average of 17%.
