German population hits all-time high

Published on

Germany’s population grew in 2022 to an unprecedented level of 84.3 million people, under the effect of record immigration, according to the latest figures of the National Statistics Office, cited by Reuters and Agerpres.

According to initial estimates published by Destatis, compared to the end of 2021, Germany’s population increased by 1.1 million people, the reason for this strong increase being a record level of net immigration.

According to these estimates, 1.42 million to 1.45 million more people came to Germany in this period than left across the borders.

In other words, net immigration in 2022 was more than four times higher than in the previous year, 2021 (329,163), and higher than at any time since records began in 1950. In addition to the large number of war refugees from Ukraine, the arrival of immigrants of other nationalities has also increased, the German statistics office found.

He also notes that, in the three decades since the unification of Germany, the country’s population has grown significantly, but that, without net immigration, since 1972 the trend would have been the opposite of the decrease, given that every year since then more many people than were born.

The final results of last year’s census are to be published this summer.
