PSD’s Dincu: We need to protect Danube Delta ecosystem, but also help our Ukrainian neighbors

Published on

Social Democrat Senator Vasile Dincu considers that the „temporary conflict” – as he terms it – over the works carried out by the Ukrainian side on the Bystroye Canal can be sorted out through dialogue so that both the Danube Delta ecosystem is protected, and the Ukrainian neighbors can tend to their economic problems, according to Agerpres.

„First of all, we will have to conduct surveys, research. So far, we haven’t been able to do an exhaustive study on the influences of the Bystroye Canal on the Danube Delta ecosystem and we must engage in political dialogue. We must not hide, but openly discuss the subject, yet we must do it with the positive desire to solve it. But we must understand the matter, have strong leaders who also understand the motivations of others. (…) I believe this is a temporary conflict and that in the future we will find a good solution to protect this unique ecosystem, but also to support our Ukrainian neighbors solve some of their current economic problems,” Dincu declared at the Senate on Thursday.

According to him, certain institutions have already started discussions with the Ukrainian side.

He also mentioned that in his capacity as chairman of the Senate’s European Affairs Committee, he has „an opinion” on an EU directive that will be discussed in the plenary, and which calls into question the navigability of the Chilia Canal.

„I am sure that both the Romanians and the Ukrainians have readied their expert teams. (…) I also discussed a little with Transport Minister Grindeanu and I encouraged him, among others, to raise the issue with other ministries. We must raise this problem in good faith, come up with arguments, with specialists. I don’t think we should mute the issue,” added Dincu.
