PSD’s Ciolacu on ballot merger: Cannot be done constitutionally, not good for democracy either

Published on

There is enough time to make a decision on wether to merge elections, leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Marcel Ciolacu said on Monday evening on private TV broadcaster Antena 3, emphasizing that he does not support the idea because „it isn’t good for democracy either”, write Agerpres.

„There are discussions, I don’t think we can put the election to the European Parliament together with anything else, it’s out of question, because it is much earlier. In my opinion, local elections cannot be constitutionally merged with the general elections, we’ll see, we will have this discussion within each party,” Ciolacu declared.

Asked if he would support combining local and general elections, the PSD leader denied, stressing that the Constitution doesn’t allow for that.

„No, but it cannot be done constitutionally. (…) It’s a decision we have enough time to make. To be fair, I don’t think it’s good for democracy either. It’s fair for each of us to think what is best for democracy, not only what we live in real time, but also what’s next after the decisions we make,” said the PSD leader.

Ciolacu explained that he doesn’t support merging elections even if this were constitutional, and this topic does not represent a critical issue for the coalition.
