National Company Nuclearelectrica and the Republic of Moldova’s energy company Energocom signed on Tuesday in Cernavoda a Memorandum of Understanding for the development of long-term energy cooperation and the accomplishment of common strategic goals, write Agerpres.
The purpose of the Memorandum of Understanding is to explore options for ensuring the delivery of energy from Nuclearelectrica’s future production by the new capacities that are to enter commercial operation, mainly Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant, as well as to support the development of human resource capacities and competencies in the field of nuclear energy.
„Units 3 and 4 of the Cernavoda nuclear power plant will be a pillar for the energy sector of both Romania and the Republic of Moldova, as well as for the two countries’ decarbonization. By putting two more CANDU reactors into commercial operation and through the project of modular reactors small, Nuclearelectrica can contribute clean energy to Romania’s energy security, while at the same time supporting the Republic of Moldova and other countries in the region. In 2031, Romania will have an installed nuclear energy capacity of 3,262 MW, resulting from the operation of Cernavoda Units 1, 2, 3 and 4 and from the operation of small modular reactors, accounting for approximately 33 percent of the market share and approximately 66 percent of the total clean energy produced in Romania. Together with Energocom we can identify in due time effective solutions of support, with the common goal of achieving energy security, energy independence and consumer protection in Moldova. Also, we are proud to contribute to the development of human resources, because development and innovation are based on highly qualified personnel,” said Nuclearelectrica CEO Cosmin Ghita.
Energocom acting manager Victor Banzari said that last year Nuclearelectrica helped Energocom to ensure the power supply for the Republic of Moldova’s consumers.
Nuclearelectrica has a key role at national level, contributing over 18 percent of its nuclear energy output to the total energy production and 33 percent of Romania’s total CO2-free energy production.
Energocom is a 100% state-owned company, created in 2004, which markets gas and electricity and is also responsible for gas storage. Since October 2022, it is a member of the Romanian gas and electricity market operator (OPCOM) and of the energy exchange platforms of the Romanian Commodity Exchange.
