Danube Delta Reserve Day to be marked by baby sturgeon release ceremony

Published on

The Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Administration (ARBDD) and the Danube Delta National Research and Development Institute (INCDDD) will organize on Friday, September 1, a baby sturgeon release ceremony called Come Name Your Sturgeon, to mark the Reserve’s Day, INCDDD said in a release, write Agerpres.

September 1 was declared Day of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve in 2008, following the coming into force of the Romanian Government’s Decision No. 983 of 1990, by which the entire Danube Delta and the neighboring geographical units were declared biosphere reserve.

„The event that will take place in Isaccea, on the banks of the Danube, will see the release of 5,000 individually tagged baby Diamond sturgeon (Acipenser gueldenstaedtii),” the INCDDD said.

The sturgeon fry come from the artificial reproduction action carried out between April 24 and 28 this year as part of the project „Development of the Isaccea migratory fish monitoring station: sturgeon and mackerel” by ARBDD in partnership with INCDDD, with financing through the Large Infrastructure Operational Program.

The major goal of the project is to preserve biodiversity by implementing a set of measures from the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve Management Plan to improve the conservation status of migratory fish populations – sturgeon and mackerel – in the reserve.
