Acting Prime Minister Catalin Predoiu on Friday stated that the Constitutional Court’s decision limits transparency regarding the assets of dignitaries, and the Parliament must find a formula in this new situation.
„I don’t usually comment on decisions but this time I can tell you that I don’t see it with good eyes. However, I won’t make any professional comment before I see the explanatory. I can only say that less transparency we have in our public life, the worst things will go. The idea is to have transparency. If there are problems with the law, then we need to correct them, but I believe that, one way or the other, the public needs to have this possibility of knowing that the wealth of the high officials does not exceed their revenues, so that the Parliament must find a formula to deal with this new situation,” Predoiu told the journalists gathered in front of the Ministry of Interior.
According to him, Parliament must intervene and correct the situation. „I do not allow myself to criticize any court in Romania for the decisions it makes, it is not my job to communicate the decisions, nor do I know exactly what the reasoning was, because I did not read the reasoning. On the other hand, the result of this judicial and legislative situation is that we have less transparency regarding the publication of the assets of dignitaries. Now, this must not remain so, somehow, through cooperation between the two powers, the Legislature must now intervene and correct the situation and adopt a law that, I pray, does not violate either the Constitution or European regulations, but which also ensures the Romanian public the possibility of at least knowing that the dignitaries do not exceed their powers and do not accumulate wealth over their income, which would raise a question mark regarding their honesty,” Catalin Predoiu conveyed.
In his opinion, transparency in matters of movable and immovable property, of the wealth of dignitaries, and of patrimony is an element that can strengthen trust between citizens and those in power, at all levels. „This is not just about the high levels of the administration, but also intermediate levels,” said Predoiu.
