Almost half of Romanians intend to make purchases on Black Friday (survey)

Almost half of Romanians (46%) intend to make purchases on Black Friday 2024, especially to take advantage of discounts on products that are too expensive for their purchasing power, according to a recent survey conducted by Dynata for Revolut.

The company conducted a survey of Romanians consumers’ relationship with the security of funds in the context of Black Friday shopping and on a sample of 1,000 Romanian consumers over 18 years old.

The respondents also said that they take advantage of this opportunity to buy products that they need during the year at lower prices (45%). 8 out of 10 Romanians say, however, that they intend to spend less on Black Friday and Christmas because their budgets have been affected by inflation.

As 52% of respondents intend to buy online as against 44% in physical stores, Black Friday is by far the biggest commercial event at the end of the year and one of the occasions that contributes to the intensification of shopping scams.

According to the latest Consumer Security and Fraud Report, conducted by Revolut, shopping scams are the main type of bank fraud reported in Romania in the first half of 2024, with 54% of the total number of reported frauds. Globally, the same Revolut report showed that 60% of scams reported by customers were in the same category.

Although the incidence of this type of scams is expected to increase during Black Friday, the results from the Dynata study show that only 8% of Romanians are really worried about the increased risk of fraud during the gift buying season and would prefer, for this reason, to buy from physical stores instead. Romanians aged 45-54 and seniors (65+) are even more fearful than the other age categories and prefer to go to stores to shop on Black Friday.

The same age classes believe that Black Friday is not necessarily a good opportunity to shop, especially because of scam websites or fake sellers (6%). At the same time, 86% of respondents believe that on Black Friday they can catch some good deals.

Only 4% of respondents say that on Black Friday you can be fooled very easily and become a victim of scams, with women being more worried than men 5% to 3%.
