Annual inflation rate down to 5.9 pct in April 2024

The annual inflation rate fell to 5.9% in April 2024, from 6.61% in March, as prices of food products rose by 2.07%, of non-food products by 7.17% and of services by 10.05%, according to data published Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

„The consumer price index stood at 100.08% in April 2024 compared to March 2024. The year-to-date inflation rate (April 2024 compared to December 2023) was 2.4%. The annual inflation rate was 5.9% in April 2024 compared to April 2023. The average rate of change in consumer prices was 8.1% in the last 12 months (May 2023 – April 2024) year-over-year,” the INS release said.

According to the cited source, the harmonized index of consumer prices was 100.36% in April 2024 compared to March 2024. The annual inflation rate calculated on the basis of the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) was 6.3% in April 2024 compared to April 2023. The average rate of change in consumer prices based on the HICP was 8.0% in the last 12 months (May 2023 – April 2024), year-over-year.

The National Bank of Romania (BNR) revised down to 4.7% its inflation forecast for the end of this year from 4.8% in November, and expects it to reach 3.5% by the end of 2025, according to data presented by the National Bank of Romania (BNR) governor, Mugur Isarescu.
