Arrivals in Romanian tourist accommodation units up 4.2pct January through September

Romanian tourist accommodation units (including apartments and rooms for rent) welcomed a total of 11.153 million people between January 1 and September 30, 2024, an increase of 4.2% compared to the same period in 2023, according to the data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

Of the total number of arrivals, between January 1 and September 30, 2024, the arrivals of Romanian tourists in tourist accommodation units represented 83.5%, while the arrivals of foreign tourists represented 16.5%.

In terms of overnight stays, the tourist accommodation units (including apartments and rooms for rent) welcomed 24.1 million tourists, between January 1 and September 30, 2024, up by 3.3% compared to January 1-September 30, 2023.

The overnight stays of Romanian tourists accounted for 84.3 % of the total number of overnight stays, between January 1 and September 30, 2024, while the overnight stays of foreign tourists represented 15.7%.

The average length of stay in the mentioned period was 2.2 days for Romanian tourists and 2.1 days for foreign tourists.

The net usage index of accommodation capacity over January 1 – September 30, 2024, was 31.8% of the total tourist accommodation units (including apartments and rooms for rent), which shows an increase of 0.2 percentage points against January 1 – September 30, 2023.

By county, the number of tourist arrivals in the tourist accommodation units (including apartments and rooms for rent) saw higher values, in the mentioned period, in: Constanta (1.69 million people), (1.471 million people) and Brasov (1.124 million people), while the overnight stays of tourists in tourist accommodation units (including apartments and rooms for rent), recorded higher values in: Constanta (5.384 million people), Bucharest (2.91 million people) and Brasov (2.128 million people).

In terms of country, most foreign tourists staying in tourist accommodation units in Romania (including apartments and rooms for rent), between January 1 and September 30, 2024, came from: Germany (193,000 people), Italy (156,900 people) and Israel (120,900 people).

According to the border records, the arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania accounted for 10.533 million people between January 1 and September 30, 2024, most of these tourists (81.4 %) using road transport to enter Romania.

The departures of Romanian visitors abroad, as registered at the border points, accounted for 12.770 million people between January 1 and September 30, 2024, 72.8% of them using road transport and 26.4% air transport.

According to the INS, as a result of Romania’s accession to the Schengen Area (maritime and air) on April 1, 2024, starting from the second quarter of this year, the information on the arrivals of foreign visitors to Romania and the departures of Romanian visitors abroad will have a new structure, and the data will no longer be comparable to those published until March 31, 2024.
