Two men were arrested on Tuesday for international drug trafficking, after the prosecutors and the police discovered in the Port of Constanta cocaine hidden in approximately 15 tonnes of frozen fruit pulp from Ecuador.
According to a press release from Directorate for the Investigation of Organized Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) sent to AGERPRES, on Tuesday, the DIICOT prosecutors ordered the detention of two people, aged 33 and 36, investigated in a criminal case concerning the crimes of high-risk international drug trafficking and high-risk drug trafficking.
„On September 18, during an import operation from Ecuador, carried out by a commercial company from Romania, a container with barrels and boxes of fruit pulp was unloaded in a terminal in the Port of Constanta. Given certain data and indications that high-risk drugs, namely cocaine, are concealed in the food cargo, under the coordination of DIICOT specific investigative activities were carried out to collect the necessary evidence in the case. During the investigations, two Romanian citizens were identified as involved in the criminal activity”, the press release states.
According to DIICOT, on September 18, after completing the customs formalities, the container was taken over and transported to the municipality of Aiud, and 71 barrels containing frozen fruit pulp were moved to a refrigerated truck, transshipment being carried out from the maritime container that had 16 tonnes of product loaded in 75 plastic barrels, each with a net quantity of about 200 kilograms.
DIICOT specifies that the final destination of the transport was the Netherlands, where it should have arrived on Wednesday.
On Monday, with the support of the Border Police, the truck was stopped at the Nadlac 1 Border Crossing Point, and following the control, cocaine was discovered in the barrels containing approximately 15 tonnes of fruit pulp, inform the investigators, who add that, after the drug seizure, authorities intervened to catch people and execute several home search warrants, including in the municipality of Aiud, where a warehouse was allegedly set up to place part of the transported goods, namely four barrels of plastic material and 88 of boxes containing approximately 880 kilograms of frozen fruit.
The judge of rights and freedoms of the Constanta Court will be notified with the proposal of preventive arrest of the two.
