The President of the College of Physicians of the Municipality of Bucharest (CMMB), Dr. Catalina Poiana, drew attention, on the occasion of World Cancer Day, to the fact that there is an insufficient number of oncologists in the public health system, according to Agerpres.
„The CMMB message was one of support for doctors and patients, but one of the big problems in the fight against cancer is represented by the lack of a sufficient number of oncologists in the public health system. When we talk about cancer management, it is mandatory to discuss the number oncologists from the public health system. Oncology patients should not have to wait in queues in hospitals or offices, due to the fact that an oncologist has to consult and take care of a very large number of patients”, stated the CMMB president, according to a release sent to AGERPRES on Sunday.
She mentioned that „unfortunately, very often in Romania, cancer is detected quite late”.
CMMB is alongside the oncologists who are involved and professionally care for cancer patients and supports the activity of patient associations involved in oncology, the press release mentioned.
„There is a need for doctors from the specialty of medical oncology, there is a need for a civil society to support patients with oncological conditions”, Catalina Poiana said.
World Cancer Day was organized for the first time in the world in 2006 and since then it has been celebrated every year on February 4. On Saturday evening, 43 important objectives in Bucharest, from seven cities and a commune in Romania were lit up in orange, to mark this world day of the fight against cancer.
