The International Human Rights Day is meant to raise awareness that fundamental human rights and freedoms must be protected at all levels of a legal system, but also by all participants in public life, according to a message from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
The Romanian Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomes the celebration of International Human Rights Day on December 10 as an occasion to remember that human rights are universal, indivisible and inalienable and their promotion and defence is imperative for the preservation of human dignity. At the same time, genuine respect for and observance of human rights are indispensable for peace, democracy and sustainable development.
„The day of December 10 has a significance all the deeper as this year we are again witnessing particularly serious attacks on human rights, on a broad scale, from Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine, which has led and continues to lead to unimaginable human suffering, to serious violations of human rights in different parts of the world,” shows the Foreign Affairs Ministry in the press release.
The Romanian Ministry adds that Romania’s foreign policy actions have proven, over time, our country’s deep attachment to the values of democracy, the rule of law and human rights, being inseparable from Romania’s membership of the Euro-Atlantic area of freedoms and rights.
„These values guarantee the peace, security and prosperity of all Romanian citizens, wherever they may be,” MAE points out.
As a member of the Human Rights Council for the 2025-2027 term, Romania confirms its commitment to contribute to the global response to these challenges by promoting coordination in all relevant multilateral fora, including the UN, the Council of Europe, the OSCE and other regional organizations.
