DefMin meets with Kaja Kallas, situation in Black Sea region, focus of discussions

The Minister of Defense, Angel Tîlvăr, met in Brussels with the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, during the discussions, the common vision regarding the need to strengthen the EU’s role as a strategic actor in the Eastern Neighborhood was reconfirmed.

According to a press release from the Ministry of National Defence sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday, Minister Angel Tîlvăr emphasized, at the meeting, that Romania shares the position expressed by the High Representative regarding the continuation of support granted to Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, as well as the importance of maintaining a clear European perspective for these states, but also for the countries in the Western Balkans.

A central point of the dialogue was the situation in the Black Sea region, which Romania considers an area of ??strategic importance for Euro-Atlantic security and of major economic relevance for the Union.

In the context of the development of the new EU Strategy for the Black Sea, Minister Tîlvăr reiterated our country’s firm commitment to actively contribute to joint efforts to secure and stabilize the region, the Ministry of National Defence indicated.

The Minister of National Defense welcomed the European Union’s operational efforts in support of partner states, especially in those in the immediate vicinity, but also in those in other more distant theaters of operations, efforts that Romania will continue to support.

”Our country’s contribution to the EU missions and operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Central African Republic, where Romania ensures the command of the forces, as well as the efforts within the EUMAM mission of training and military assistance for Ukraine, were highlighted,” the quoted source reads.

The discussions also addressed the publication of the strategic document „White Paper on European Defense Preparedness” and the launch of the SAFE Initiative, projects welcomed by Romania as essential steps for strengthening the European Union’s response capacity in the field of defense.
