Eight foreigners expelled after trying to illegally cross border

Eight men from Sri Lanka and Bangladesh who had come to Romania to work, but were later caught trying to leave the country illegally to reach Western Europe, were deported and banned from returning to the European Union for five years.

According to a press release sent on Thursday by the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI), the agents of the Arad Accommodation Center for Foreigners Taken in Public Custody escorted the eight foreigners to the Cluj-Napoca International Airport, where they were boarded on commercial flights to the countries of origin.

The expelled men are aged between 24 and 41 years.

„They entered Romania legally, between 2023 and April 2024, for the purpose of employment. However, in June 2024, they were taken into public custody after being caught by the border police while trying to fraudulently cross the state border,” IGI mentions.

Upon leaving the country, the eight foreigners were banned from entering the territory of the European Union, the European Economic Area and the Swiss Confederation for a period of five years.
