„Whether it’s mass migration, waves of refugees, a pandemic, a natural disaster, a humanitarian crisis, the impact of an event such as Brexit, or disruption to the energy market, the European Union must be prepared to respond appropriately,” said the president of the PSD National Council.
MEP Mihai Tudose questioned the European Commission, calling for a review of the EU framework on budgetary flexibility.
„The European Court of Auditors published a report this month analyzing the rules governing the EU’s budgetary flexibility. The audit concluded that we have an overly complex framework that hinders the rapid mobilization of funds in unforeseen situations. At EU level, we are talking about an amount of at least €28 billion available for emergencies in the 2021-2027 budget. What is not working as it should, given that this amount is available? I quote from the Court of Auditors’ communication: a maze of instruments, which sometimes overlap, without a clear order of priorities,” Mihai Tudose pointed out.
The president of the PSD National Council requested, in a question addressed to the European Commission, a simplification of the framework so that the EU can quickly mobilize the resources appropriate to the challenges it faces.
„Whether it is mass migration, waves of refugees, a pandemic, a natural disaster, a humanitarian crisis, the impact of an event such as Brexit, or disruption of the energy market, the European Union must be prepared to respond appropriately. Unfortunately, for the past five years, we have had situations from which we can and must draw conclusions. That is why I have asked the Commission to simplify budgetary flexibility in two areas: the reallocation of resources according to changing priorities and the possibility of increasing the initial budgets if necessary,” said Social Democrat MEP Mihai Tudose.
