Minister of Family, Youth and Equal Opportunities Gabriela Firea announced on Friday having submitted her resignation to the prime minister and suspended herself, for a limited time, from the position of chair of the Bucharest Social Democratic Party (PSD) chapter, write Agerpres.

„I have decided, with great regret, but determined and unashamed to leave the government of Romania. A few minutes ago, I had a meeting with Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu in which I tendered my resignation as minister of family, youth and equal opportunities. I have nothing to be ashamed of, I feel no guilt, I would not have accepted anything bad to happen to anyone and not react. I am leaving so that the prime minister can work quietly on the good economic and social projects for Romanians, and for PSD and PNL [National Liberal Party] ministers to be able to present their work. In this atmosphere of total war against me, as a member of the government, normal activity cannot continue (…),” Firea wrote on social media.

She added that the stakes of those who „set their crosshairs on her” is not the Ministry of the Family, but the reconfiguration of the political stages, which is the reason why she has suspended herself, for a limited period, from the position of chair of the Bucharest PSD chapter and is retiring, for the same period, from the party’s National Standing Bureau.

She said that she is „completely innocent” and that what happened to her in the last days was aimed at depriving her of the chances of winning the office of Bucharest general mayor.

Referring to her adviser Ligia Gheorghe, she said that she is also paying because she trusted people and that none of them knew that there were irregularities at residential care homes.

On the other hand, she added that she will continue all initiatives for people, especially for children, young people, women, from the Romanian Senate, together with her party colleagues.

„It is not difficult for me to start from scratch, to make efforts again as a simple lawmaker, without hefty political offices for the time being. It is an honour to me to be useful to the Romanians, my political family, my colleagues,” wrote Firea .
