Romania’s Foreign Affairs Ministry welcomes the ratification on Wednesday, by Ukraine’s Parliament Verkhovna Rada, of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and emphasizes that following this decision Ukraine will become the 125th state party to this international treaty that laid the foundations of the only permanent international criminal jurisdiction with universal vocation.
„This move is of particular importance, considering especially the context in which it takes place, underlining Ukraine’s commitment to international justice and the desire to fight impunity for the most serious international crimes (aggression, genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes ). Ukraine’s action undoubtedly contributes to the legitimization of its efforts to activate all possible jurisdictional mechanisms to sanction Russia’s aggression against it,” the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
Romania reiterates in this context its firm support for international criminal justice and for the prosecution of all those guilty of crimes within the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, with Russia’s aggression against Ukraine unquestionably sitting in this spectrum.
