CSM Deva will set up an artistic gymnastics section whose coordinator will be former European and world champion Gina Gogean, Sports Minister Carol Eduard Novak announced on Thursday on Facebook, following discussions with the mayor of Deva, Florin Oancea, and the former gymnast, write Agerpres.
”Sport must unite, and I, as minister, have always sought to mediate the tense situations that performance and the pressure it generates sometimes generate. Today’s meeting with Mrs Gina Gogean and the Mayor of Deva, Mr Florin Oancea, was intended to clarify such a situation and had some important conclusions. One of them is that no one can take away the status and role of the Deva training centre in the history of Romanian gymnastics. Deva is and will remain an emblem of sport, and the fact that the local authorities show openness to this field and its development, that there is concern for investment and that professionals are supported, are additional guarantees,” the message published in the social network reads.
Multiple European and world champion Gina Gogean announced her resignation as coach of the women’s national artistic gymnastics team on Friday in an open letter.
”I never imagined, after years spent in the gymnastics hall, as a medal-winning athlete for Romania and as a club and national team coach, that I, Gina Gogean, would end up living the humiliation I have been enduring for several months. I never imagined that Romanian gymnastics would be shaken from the inside by so much hatred and divided by people who showed disrespect towards our sport and towards those who contributed to the selection and improvement of the current gymnasts in the team. I want you to read these lines and understand that I am not and will not be a victim, I can walk with my head held high. Romanian gymnastics is already paying the price,” said Gina Gogean.
”What is happening now at the team goes against some principles that I consider defining for success in sport, in gymnastics. People in the Romanian gymnastics management structure have tried through incorrect means to denigrate everything that has to do with those who have worked on this team until December 2022, manipulating the parents in order to denigrate and eliminate people who are not helpful in the training process. With these gymnasts on the team, together with all the colleagues in the technical team, we won 16 medals at the European Championships in Mersin 2020, Munich 2022 and at the European Youth Olympic Festival in 2022, as well as 10 medals at the World Cups in the last two years,” Gogean stressed.
