Foreign Affairs Minister Bogdan Aurescu participated on Saturday in the Informal meeting of Foreign Affairs Ministers (Gymnich), in Stockholm, alongside Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, where he highlighted the need to find a solid legal basis for the creation, as soon as possible, of a Special Tribunal to prosecute the crimes of aggression committed in Ukraine, Romania being part of the Core Group for its creation, write Agerpres.

According to a press release of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE) sent to AGERPRES on Saturday, the Ukrainian Foreign Minister presented the developments on the situation on the ground and referred to the support Ukraine still needs, as well as the prospects for the implementation of the peace formula proposed by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Dmytro Kuleba welcomed Minister Aurescu’s proposal that a Foreign Affairs Council meeting should be organised in Kyiv and reiterated the invitation to all European foreign ministers to visit the Ukrainian capital in this format.

The head of Romanian diplomacy underlined his appreciation for Ukraine’s particular resilience in the context of the war of aggression and called for continued support for Ukraine at EU level, but also bilaterally, on multiple dimensions, for as long as necessary to defeat Russia. He presented Romania’s support, including for the more than 4.2 million refugees who have entered Romania since the beginning of the war and for the transit of agricultural products (around 15.5 million tonnes).

Minister Bogdan Aurescu underlined that Romania strongly supports the goal of holding accountable those guilty of crimes in Ukraine, including of the crime of aggression.

EU enlargement is a strategic option for the EU and the Romanian minister highlighted the firm support for the European path of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova and for a decision to open EU accession negotiations with the two states by the end of the year, reads the MAE release.

Minister Aurescu highlighted the need for reflection at EU level on the different components of the peace formula proposed by President Zelenskyy, including the reconstruction of Ukraine, as discussed, at his proposal, during the second trilateral meeting Romania – Ukraine – Republic of Moldova, hosted by the head of the Romanian diplomacy in Bucharest, exactly one month ago, with the participation of the defence ministers, at the same time as the First Black Sea Security Conference, co-organized with Ukraine.
