Romania’s Foreign Minister Luminita Odobescu on Wednesday said that Romania wants more substantial cooperation with Luxembourg, including the defence industry.
She thanked for the presence of Luxembourg troops in Romania as part of the consolidation of NATO’s deterrence and defence posture on the eastern flank and in the Black Sea.
„This military presence gives a special impetus to the development of our bilateral cooperation, which we want to become more and more solid and substantial, including in the field of defence industry,” Odobescu told a joint news conference with visiting Luxembourg’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Xavier Bettel.
She underlined the excellent cooperation between the two countries, saying that the bilateral ties between the two nations turn 115 in 2025.
According to Odobescu, the Romanian community in Luxembourg is very well integrated and contributes to the consolidation of relations between the two countries.
Discussions also focused on regional security and the war waged by Russia in Ukraine, as well as the support provided to Ukraine and Moldova.
„Both Romania and Luxembourg are promoters of the enlargement policy not only to the East, to Ukraine and Moldova, but also to the Western Balkans, because it is very important to maintain security and prosperity in our region,” Odobescu said.
She thanked Bettel and Luxembourg for their support for Romania’s accession to the Schengen area.
„He has always been a vocal advocate of Romania in this process.”
The two officials on Wednesday signed an exchange programme in science and technology, higher education, education, culture, youth and sports concluded between the government of Romania and Luxembourg for the years 2024-2028.
