Gabriela Ruse, Anca Todoni through to Wimbledon last qualifying round

Romanian tennis players Gabriela Ruse and Anca Todoni advanced on Wednesday to the third and last qualifying round for the women’s main singles draw of the Wimbledon grass tournament, the third Grand Slam of the year.

Ruse (26, WTA’s 152nd) secured a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Czech Dominika Salkova (19, WTA’s 149th) after one hour and 17 minutes.

In the decisive match for acceding to the main draw, Ruse will face Croatian Lea Boskovic (24, WTA’s 199th).

Anca Todoni (19, WTA’s 141st) ousted Australian Kimberly Birrell (26, WTA’s 132nd) 6-7 (7/9), 7-5, 6-4, after more than three hours of play (3 h 04 min). The Romanian bounced back in the decisive set from 0-3.

Her next opponent will be Spaniard Nuria Parrizas-Diaz (32, WTA’s 166th).

The Romanians each secured 40,000 pounds in prize money and 30 WTA points.
