Gov’t working on a financial energy compensation scheme for vulnerable people

Published on

The government is working on a scheme whereby vulnerable people will receive direct financial compensation for electricity expenses after July 1, 2025, and at the same time, Romanians can already benefit from fair prices through the competitive market, Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja wrote on Thursday on Facebook.

Alarmist information has been circulating lately according to which „bills will blow up after the cap is removed starting July 1”, Burduja noted. For the sake of the public opinion’s correct information, he went on to say that „the support provided to consumers is not being scrapped, but a necessary and responsible adjustment of the protection mechanism is being made. After July 1, 2025, state support won’t be withdrawn, but there will be a shift from a generalized cap to a targeted system which will direct support where it is truly needed.” The new mechanism will allow the efficient allocation of public resources to energy-poor households, to people with disabilities and to Romanians who depend on medical equipment to live, Burduja wrote.

He pointed out that several working meetings were organized after the entry into force of OUG No. 6/2025 in order to identify the mechanisms for implementing new forms of support after July 1.

„All these efforts aim to identify fair criteria and clear mechanisms for the implementation of the new form of support for those who really need it. The Romanian government is preparing a system through which vulnerable people will receive direct financial compensation for electricity expenses,” the minister said.

„Monthly support is envisaged, that should be granted according to income, household structure and other objective criteria. No one will be left behind. Also, the Romanians can already benefit from fair prices through the competitive market. The National Energy Regulatory Authority makes an offer comparator available to everyone, to help consumers choose the best option,” the official said, assuring that the Romanian state is preparing a fair framework to continue protecting those who really need it.
