The Minister of Health, Alexandru Rafila, requests the resignation of the manager and the medical director of the Emergency Clinical Hospital Sfantul Pantelimon in Bucharest, considering the „defective functioning and public distrust” generated by the events within the last months and the ongoing investigations.
„Access to quality medical services in emergency hospitals is essential for the success of the reforms and investments carried out by the Ministry of Health, and the attitudes that endanger these important objectives for the health system are unacceptable,” the Ministry of Health informs in a press release.
On Wednesday, four employees of the Sfantul Pantelimon Hospital were picked up by the police and taken to hearings, in connection with the suspicious deaths in the ICU Department.
In April, the prosecutors received a notification from a nurse employed at the St. Pantelimon Hospital regarding the fact that, between April 4 and 7, 2024, in the Department of Anesthesia and Intensive Care (ICU), 17 patients died, as a result of the voluntary reduction, by the medical staff, of the dose of noradrenaline – a neurotransmitter used to increase or maintain blood pressure.
The prosecutors opened a criminal case regarding the crime of murder and administered several evidence, doctors and nurses were interviewed and medical documents related to all patients who died in the ICU Department between April 4 and 7, 2024 were collected.
Later, a nurse was charged with perjury. The investigators believe that she knows what happened at the ICU Department, but refused to give information during the hearings, so the prosecutors decided to indict her.
