Heat code red in seven counties, Thursday and Friday, Code orange, yellow heat alerts

The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) has issued Code Red, Code Orange and Code Yellow warnings of heatwave and severe thermal discomfort, valid on Thursday and Friday in most of the country.

According to meteorologists, throughout Thursday, the Red Code of persistent heat and heat wave will be valid in the counties of Arad, Timis, Caras-Severin, Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt and Teleorman. In these areas, the thermal values will fall between 39 and 41 degrees, while the minimums will be around 23 degrees (tropical night), isolated up to 26 degrees in the Western Hills.

Also, an orange Code of particularly hot weather targets areas in the center of Crisana, south-west Transylvania, north Oltenia, as well as in the west and center of Muntenia, and the temperature-humidity index (ITU) will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.

According to the ANM, on Friday, August 16, a second red heat code will affect the counties of Arad, Timis, Caras-Severin, Mehedinti, Dolj, Olt and Teleorman. The heat wave will be persistent, the maximum temperatures will reach 41 degrees, and the minimum will be around 23 degrees (tropical night), isolated up to 26 degrees in the Western Hills. It will be hot and the thermal discomfort will be especially accentuated, and the ITU will exceed the critical threshold of 80 units.

During the day of Friday, an orange Code of heightened thermal discomfort will be in force in the center of Crisana, the south-west of Transylvania, the north of Oltenia, as well as in the west and center of Muntenia. The maximum temperatures will generally be 38 – 39 degrees, while the minimum will reach 22 degrees, characterizing a tropical night.

At the same time, on Friday, a Yellow Code of heatwave applies to the north of Crisana, Maramures, Moldova and locally Transylvania and Muntenia, where the maximum temperatures will generally be 34 – 37 degrees. The thermal discomfort will be high, the ITU will be around the critical threshold of 80 units and, locally, the minimums will not drop below 20 degrees.

ANM specifies that, in the coming days, the heat wave will persist in most of the country.
