Hidroelectrica, net profit down 56% in first quarter, due to unfavorable hydrological conditions

Published on

Hidroelectrica reported, in the first quarter of the current year, a net profit down by 56%, to 589 million RON, compared to 1.326 billion RON in the same period last year, and revenues down by 26%, to 1.868 billion RON, according to the quarterly financial results published on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB) website.

„In the first quarter of 2025, the Hidroelectrica Group recorded operational and financial results above budget estimates, but down compared to the same period of 2024. The difficult operational context, marked by unfavorable hydrological conditions, led to a 38% decrease in net electricity production compared to the same period of the previous year – down to 2,654 GWh, the lowest level in the last 10 years for the first quarter. Revenues were 26% lower compared to Q1 2024, and the decrease in the operating margin by 42% and the net margin by 40% compared to the same period of 2024 reflects the reconfiguration of the revenue structure, with an increasing share of the supply segment. Even in this context, the Hidroelectrica Group „obtains a gross profit 26% above the forecast level, demonstrating efficient resource management and the ability to cope with adverse natural cycles,” the company’s report states.

Also, earnings per share are down 56%, to 1.31 RON, from 2.95 RON.

The operating profit obtained in the first quarter of 2025 is 643 million RON, down 57%, compared to 1.507 billion RON at the end of March 2024.

In the first quarter of 2025, net electricity production recorded a significant decrease of approximately 38% compared to the same period of the previous year, reaching 2,654 GWh, the lowest value for the first quarter in the last 10 years. This significant impact is mainly caused by poor hydrological conditions, namely a period of severe hydrological drought, with an average Danube flow in the first quarter of 2025 of only 4,257 m3/s, down by approximately 40% compared to the same period of 2024.

According to the company, this influence of hydrological risk has already been anticipated and integrated into the revenue and expenditure budget for 2025.

„Through a prudent approach and rigorous financial planning, the impact of natural conditions was partially mitigated by adapting the commercial strategy, namely trading on the forward market and consolidating the supply segment. This allowed the company to achieve a gross profit increase by 26% compared to budget estimates,” the report states.

The number of consumption points (CPs) in the portfolio as of March 31, 2025 is 630,927, an increase of 8%, or 47,498 CPs compared to March 31, 2024, when there were 583,429 CPs. This evolution is the consequence of the entry into the supply portfolio of a significant number of new household customers, but also of the growth at an even faster pace of the non-household segment.

„This dynamic supports both revenue diversification and the reduction of exposure to wholesale market volatility, aligning with the strategic objective of balancing the portfolio,” claim Hidroelectrica representatives.

In January 2025, according to the ANRE monthly report, Hidroelectrica recorded a market share of 14.56%, ranking second among competitive suppliers, following the merger of the companies PPC Energie and PPC Energie Muntenia, part of the PPC group in Romania, starting with December 31, 2024.

„This integrated approach – exploring external growth opportunities and strengthening internal ones – has the potential to strengthen the company’s competitive advantage, diversify revenue sources and mitigate structural exposure to seasonal and hydrological risks specific to hydropower production,” the report added.
