The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luminita Odobescu, participated in Warsaw, on Wednesday, together with her Polish and Turkish counterparts, Radoslaw Sikorski and Hakan Fidan, in the the trilateral format meeting on security issues Romania – Poland – Turkey, the dialogue focusing on security developments, and the impact of the war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine.

According to a statement sent by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAE), the priorities from the perspective of the NATO summit in Washington were also addressed, with an emphasis on strengthening the allied deterrence and defense posture on the Eastern Flank and strengthening support for Ukraine.

„A distinct theme was the support of the Republic of Moldova, the state most exposed to the negative consequences of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The foreign ministers also discussed issues related to the deepening of cooperation in a trilateral format,” the press release reads.

Minister Odobescu emphasized the importance of continuing practical support for Ukraine, „essentially both for this state to be able to fulfill its own objectives in the war and to follow the path of Euro-Atlantic integration”.

The Romanian official also referred to the multi-dimensional significance of the Black Sea in the context of the war started by Russia against Ukraine and pointed out the need for tiered measures so that this sea can have an open character.

„Thus, the cooperation of the riparian Allies, Romania, Bulgaria and Turkey, in the naval group aimed at demining operations, will be a first step for increasing security, in the perspective of restoring freedom of navigation,” the press release mentions.

Furthermore, the head of Romanian diplomacy emphasized the importance of the NATO summit in Washington, both from the anniversary point of view, and the reconfirmation of the leaders’ firm commitment to the Alliance’s fundamental task – collective defense, essential in the context of Russian aggression on Ukraine.

Odobescu also insisted on the importance that the decisions from this summit determine „decisive steps” in support of Ukraine in the defense against the „unjust and illegal” war started by Russia and clarity regarding the prospect of realizing the objective of this state’s accession to NATO.

Minister Luminita Odobescu also referred to the need for a close relationship with the Alliance’s partners, regardless of the extent to which they are affected by the war started by Russia over Ukraine. At the same time, she insisted on the essential nature of supporting the European path of Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, as well as on the efficient use of all existing European instruments.
