Increase in minimum salary from January 1 is step forward, but not enough, union leader says

Published on

The measure agreed within the Tripartite National Council regarding the increase in the minimum salary to 4,050 RON from January 1, 2025 represents a step forward, said Dumitru Costin, president of the National Trade Union Bloc.

He participated on Wednesday afternoon in the meeting of the Tripartite National Council, held at the Victoria Palace.

He said that, as a result of the application of this measure, there will also be „unfortunate” cases, such as postal employees.

He appreciated that the measure agreed represents a step forward.

„It is not enough, it is a step forward. I must remind you that, recently, the Senate voted an amendment to the draft law approved by the Government, the draft law that transposes the European Directive on the minimum salary. In the draft law that left the Government there was a margin, minimum 50%, maximum 52%, a margin of negotiation within the Tripartite National Council, between the Government, employers and unions. The business milieu had the political support even from the level of the governing coalition, as we found in the debates at the committee that the minimum 50% – maximum 52% has changed to a minimum of 47%. Anyway, in the coming days the debate and the final vote will follow in the Chamber of Deputies. Coming back, it is a step forward (…) Unfortunately, for the moment it seems that progressive taxation is no longer discussed even at the coalition level or at least at the Government level, we remain the only fools who consider that such a measure is normal and opportune”, stated Costin .

In this context, the leader of the National Bank of Romania specified that the government representatives told them that they intend to adopt the State Budget Law in the Parliament next year until the next Government is installed.
