Independent candidate Calin Georgescu on Monday challenged with the High Court of Cassation and Justice the decision of the Central Electoral Bureau (BEC) to resume the presidential election, after the Constitutional Court of Romania annulled the results of the first round.
This is a trial in which Calin Georgescu and the Coalition for the Defence of the Rule of Law sued the BEC and several other institutions: the Ministry of Defence, the Defence General Staff, the Government, the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the High Court of Cassation and Justice, the Constitutional Court, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and also president Klaus Iohannis and the other presidential candidate who passed the first round of election, Elena Lasconi.
The main object of the file refers to the annulment of the decision of the Electoral Bureau, namely the BEC decisions no. 230D/2024, no. 231D/2024 and no. 232D/2024, which refer to the annulment of the entire electoral process and the resumption of the presidential election from scratch, based on the decision of the Constitutional Court.
