INS: 101,755 enterprise groups in Romania in 2023, of which 96,298 multinational enterprise groups

A total of 101,755 enterprise groups were identified in Romania in 2023, of which 5,457 resident and 96,298 multinational (707 domestically controlled and 95,591 foreign-controlled, respectively), according to data published on Monday by the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the source, most of the enterprise subgroups in Romania are controlled from Germany, France and the United States of America. Out of the total number of foreign-controlled multinational enterprise groups identified in Romania, 15,686 were controlled by foreign legal entities and 79,905 by foreign individuals.

The distribution of the enterprise groups in Romania by economic activity according to National Classification of Economic Activities – CAEN Rev. 2 shows that most of them operate in: Section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (32.3% of the total number of enterprise groups); Section F – Construction (11.6% of the total); Section M – Professional, scientific and technical activities (10.2%); Section C – Manufacturing (9.2%); Section L – Real estate (7.8%).

The al-resident enterprise groups were mainly active in the following sectors: section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (17.2%); section F – Construction (10.9%); section M – Professional, scientific and technical activities (10.5%); section C – Manufacturing (10.3%); section S – Other service activities (9.9%).

According to an INS release, in Romania, in 2023, 29.9% of the total number of employees in active enterprises worked in enterprises that were part of foreign-controlled multinational groups, and 22% worked in foreign-controlled multinational enterprise groups from the top 10 countries.

„Relative to the share of the number of employees, the majority of Romanian enterprise subgroups are controlled from Germany, France and the United States. The results for 2023 indicate that, according to the share of the number of employees, the first place goes to subgroups of enterprises controlled by legal entities or individuals from Germany (18.9%), the second place to those controlled from France (10.8%), and the third place to those controlled from the United States of America (9.2%),” the press release states.

In terms of the share of employees in the total number of foreign-controlled multinational groups, subgroups of German controlled enterprises predominated in Section C – Manufacturing (9.5%), Section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles (3.5%) and M – Professional, scientific and technical activities (3.2%).

For subgroups of France-controlled enterprises, 4.2% of employees were in Section C – Manufacturing, 2.1% were in Section G – Wholesale and retail trade; Repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, and 1.5% in Section J – Information and communication.

The subgroups of enterprises controlled from the United States of America had the highest number of employees in Section C – Manufacturing (3.8%) and Section J – Information and communication (2.7%).
