Interim President Bolojan: Financial education is not a luxury, but a necessity

Interim President Ilie Bolojan says financial education is an essential component of a modern and functional society, stating that it is not a luxury, but a necessity, in a message delivered on Friday during an event held at the National Bank of Romania.

„Financial education is a crucial element in a modern, functional society, especially in an increasingly complex economic environment, where people must make important financial decisions from a younger age. It is essential that they possess the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed and responsible choices,” Bolojan said in his message, presented by honorary adviser Dragos Anastasiu at the third edition of the Financial Education Forum.

The interim president noted the important role the National Bank of Romania (BNR) has played over its 145 years of activity in the country’s economic development, particularly through its core objective of maintaining price stability. He praised the BNR’s active involvement in promoting financial education, both through its own initiatives and institutional partnerships.

„Collaboration with the National Bank in developing the 2024-2030 National Strategy for Financial Education is a necessary step, in line with OECD recommendations. The goal is clear: to strengthen financial literacy across all age groups, with a focus on young people, but also including adults and entrepreneurs. For this strategy to be effective, collaboration is needed among public institutions, the private sector, civil society and the education system. Only through cooperation can we build a society where every citizen knows how to manage their finances, avoid unnecessary risks and contribute to a sustainable economy. Financial education is not a privilege – it is a necessity. A society where people understand how the economy works and the impact of their financial decisions is more responsible and more stable.”

He also congratulated students in this area of study.

„The strategy adopted by Romania, with the support of OECD experts, is more than a document. It involves integrating financial education into schools, providing digital resources, offering programmes for parents and teachers, and most importantly, giving every young person a better chance to build a secure financial future. Financial education isn’t about getting rich quickly; it’s about understanding money and the decisions that shape our lives. It means the freedom to make informed choices,” the interim president says.

Bolojan also stressed that 11 April should serve as a landmark date for all state institutions.

„The continued granting of the High Patronage of the President of Romania to the Financial Education Forum signifies the recognition and support of initiatives that bring tangible benefits to society. To conclude, I congratulate the National Bank of Romania for its contribution and encourage all those involved- from academia, business, and administration – to pursue this initiative with dedication. It is a strategic and profoundly human effort that will shape Romania’s economic future,” the head of state concluded.
