Iohannis: I don’t think it is a great solution to discuss complicated issues in small groups

Published on

President Klaus Iohannis stated on Wednesday that it is not „a great solution” to discuss complicated issues „in small groups”.

He referred to the fact that on Wednesday evening, at the residence of NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, a meeting with President Volodymyr Zelensky is taking place, attended by leaders from Poland, Great Britain, France, and Italy.

According to the media, one of the topics of discussion is the sending of troops to maintain peace after a possible ceasefire.

„Regarding the sending of troops, it was not discussed with me, so I will not give you any opinion. If this matter is discussed at the level of the European Council or NATO, in an ‘all’ format, then Romania will present a opinion. I don’t think it’s a topic that can be treated like that, ‘en passant’, in a meeting like we have now. It’s an extremely complex issue. I have known all along about this meeting. I don’t know who convened the states that were convened. It seems a bit unusual to me, because we, in NATO, work in consensus, not in small groups. But we will certainly know exactly what was discussed and at the appropriate time we will have an official position on these issues. I don’t think it is a great solution to discuss these complicated issues in small groups,” the president pointed out.

He stated that Romania is well positioned and well connected.

„Even if today we are not participating in that discussion, we are connected. This is the reality and certainly, if necessary, certain points in our foreign policy approach will be adapted, but all will be adapted according to the national interest,” Klaus Iohannis said.
