At a meeting with leaders of international Jewish organisations on Monday, Romania’s Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said that it is important for policies to prevent and combat anti-Semitism to continue.

Ciolacu welcomed, at the Government House, leaders of international Jewish organisations gathered in Bucharest on the occasion of the events dedicated to the Meeting of the Rabbinical Council and International Jewish Leaders, as well as the 145th anniversary of the award of the first Romanian citizenship to the Jews in Romania.

He pointed to the solidity of the relationship and the continuity of over seven decades of the good relations between Romania and Israel, Romania’s closest ally and special and reliable partner in the Middle East. At the same time, the prime minister recalled the excellent cooperation with the Federation of Jewish Communities in Romania and with the president of the federation, Silviu Vexler, in terms of efforts to prevent and combat anti-Semitism, according to a governmental press release.

„No development or implementation of holistic, effective and sustainable measures, policies or strategies in all relevant areas is possible in the absence of a solid partnership with Jewish communities. It is also important for society as a whole to consolidate what we started by adopting the second National Strategy for Preventing and Combating Anti-Semitism, Xenophobia, Radicalisation and Hate Speech (2024-2027), as well as by introducing the subject History of the Jews. The Holocaust in the compulsory curriculum for the eleventh and twelfth grades starting from the 2023-2024 school year,” said Ciolacu.
