Lower House of the Jordanian Parliament passes draft extradition treaties with Romania & Cyprus

Published on

The lower house of the Parliament approved on Monday a legislative package that includes bills for the ratification of the extradition treaties between Jordan and Romania and Cyprus, informs the Jordanian news agency Petra, according to Agerpres.

During a session chaired by the president of the chamber, Ahmad Safadi, and attended by cabinet ministers, the legislators stated that the draft law will strengthen cooperation with Romania and Cyprus in the fight against serious crimes, including organized crime, will prevent criminals from escaping of justice and will facilitate their extradition in accordance with constitutional principles.

The agreement with Romania does not mean the extradition of a Jordanian or Romanian citizen and his trial in the other country, but the handing over of the criminals to be tried in their own country, explained the Minister of Justice, Ahmad Ziadat.

The President of the Legal Committee of the Parliament, deputy Ghazi Thnaibat, stated that these agreements do not mean the extradition of a Jordanian citizen to be tried in Romania or Cyprus for a crime he committed in any of these countries, but the request for his extradition in case in which he committed a crime and left Jordan.
