Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD), said on Monday that he is not convinced that he is the best candidate for the presidential elections or that he will be the candidate for the position of president, because he may be too focused on government at the moment.
Marcel Ciolacu was asked by private broadcaster Antena 3 CNN if he intends to announce his candidacy in the presidential race.
„I think it’s right to see the vote of Romanians on June 9, then politicians can make decisions very quickly and meet all the deadlines. I am not convinced myself that I am the best candidate, or that I will be the candidate for president. It’s not the first time nor the last time I’ll say it. (… ) What interests me most is to carry out this mandate and after finishing this mandate to look in the mirror and to say very clearly that I have done no harm to Romanians, to Romania or to the Social Democratic Party, because we don’t look at individual voices, we look at the decisions made within the party, both in PSD and in PNL [the National Liberal Party], the decisions were made by a large majority,” said Ciolacu.
He added that he did not like President Klaus Iohannis because „he divided and sought to empower” a party that did not win the elections.
„I think that both the PSD and the PNL are very well suited to this humanization they are going through at the moment. A people can’t live in endless hatred, a people can’t keep voting only against, against that one, because he is in a certain way, because that is the red plague. I did not like President Klaus Iohannis, he has far too much divided and sought to empower a party that did not win the elections. It turned out that everything he did was wrong. I want a real president. It will be at the proposal of one party, it will be at the proposal of several parties, I want a president of Romania who is detached, I want a president of both those who voted for him and those who did not. We must enter a new era,” said the PSD leader.
Asked if there is such a man who could become the president he wants, Ciolacu answered in the affirmative. „I am firmly convinced. Both I and Mr Nicolae Ciuca can assume this,” the PSD leader went on to say.
