Mayor Dan, serious chance to win another mandate at Bucharest City Hall (UDMR head)

Published on

The chairman of the Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR), Kelemen Hunor, believes that the accusations regarding the candidate for the Capital City Hall, Catalin Cirstoiu, must be cleared up, as they are „a vulnerability” for him and for the coalition, and at the same time gives the current mayor, Nicusor Dan, chances for a second term.

„They are condemned to walk together, this year, until the end, until December 8 (presidential election’s day, ed. n.) , and they have to manage what they assumed: a common candidacy for the Capital and other common desires. But, when the citizen sees this indecision, this stammering, ‘Who am I voting with?’, what would they say?! It seems as if they want to come to the aid of Piedone (current mayor of Sector 5) or Nicusor Dan. (…) Anything is possible until the ballots are printed, because you can withdraw from the race until the ballots are printed and after you have filed your candidacy. So, from this point of view, the procedure, legally (…) almost anything is possible, but my question is how credible is this left-wing coalition in front of voters, when in the Capital they get into this situation of supporting one day, the next day of not supporting the common candidate?” Kelemen Hunor told private broadcaster Digi24.

Regarding the accusations of incompatibility against Dr. Catalin Cirstoiu, Kelemen Hunor says that they must be clarified by him, on the one hand, and by the state institutions, on the other hand.

About the current mayor, Nicusor Dan, Kelemen says „He has a serious chance, at this moment, to emerge as the winner for a second term. Of course, the performance of Nicusor Dan can be discussed, but you cannot deny that he was in an extremely difficult period, a long period of time without a majority in the General Council and he didn’t abandon the people of Bucharest – that’s what you can say about him. I had a lot of disputes with Nicusor Dan, when he was at the „Save Bucharest” Association, I was the minister of Culture. (…) I had many, many objections, but as I am convinced that he respected me and I respected him for the principles he defended,” he explained.

About Cristian Popescu (Piedone), Kelemen Hunor stated: „I don’t believe anything constructive. With his methods of campaigning in 2024 it is not possible. You don’t go below a certain level. (…)”.
